# OnlyFans agency vs doing it yourself: which suits you?

Written by the Pout Marketing Team Last checked: 25 September 2026 6 minute read

The short answer

Doing it yourself keeps full control and everything after the platform fee, but every task costs you time. An agency takes on promotion, planning, pricing, messaging, security and reporting for a commission, and a hybrid, where you pay for help with one or two tasks, sits in between. The right choice depends on which tasks you do well, which ones drain you, and how much time you have.

Not sure which tasks to keep and which to hand over? Your free review includes a written growth plan you can use whether or not we work together.

## At a glance

- The choice is task by task, not all or nothing.
- Doing it yourself keeps full control but costs the most time.
- An agency trades a commission for time, skills and routine.
- A hybrid means paying for help with only one or two tasks.
- Whichever you choose, the account and payouts should stay in your name.

## What does this guide compare?

Running a subscription page involves the same jobs whoever does them: promotion, content planning, pricing, messaging, security and reporting. This guide takes those jobs one at a time and compares three ways of covering them: doing it all yourself, handing them to a [management agency](https://poutagency.com/guides/glossary#management-agency), or a hybrid where you get help with only some of them.

It does not try to work out whether a commission pays for itself. That is a separate question, covered in [is an OnlyFans agency worth it?](https://poutagency.com/guides/is-an-onlyfans-agency-worth-it) For the wider picture, start with our [complete guide to OnlyFans and Fansly management agencies](https://poutagency.com/guides/onlyfans-fansly-management-agencies).

## How do the options compare, task by task?

This is a general comparison. Every agency and every creator is different, so use it as a starting point for your own list rather than a verdict.

| Task | Doing it yourself | Agency | Hybrid |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Promotion | You post everywhere and learn each platform’s rules yourself. | A team plans and posts within each platform’s rules and tracks what brings subscribers. | You keep posting, with an outside plan or review. |
| Content planning | You decide what to make and when, often week to week. | A shared calendar planned around what your subscribers respond to. | A one-off plan that you then follow. |
| Pricing | You set prices and change them by feel, unless you track results. | Prices tested one change at a time and reviewed against your figures. | A pricing review every so often. |
| Messaging | Every reply is yours: personal, but time-consuming. | Chat support within your written limits and the platform’s terms. | Help at busy times only, with you covering the rest. |
| Security and leaks | You set up protection and chase leaks yourself. | Security checks and takedown requests handled for you. | A one-off security check, or takedowns only. |
| Reporting | Only as good as the notes you keep. | A regular report, which should be in plain English. | Your own tracking, with an occasional outside review. |
| Time cost | The highest: every task is yours. | The lowest: mostly creating, approving and reviewing. | In between, depending on what you hand over. |
| Cost | No commission: you keep everything after the platform fee. | A commission on earnings, agreed in writing. | A fee or commission for the parts you use. |
| Control | Complete. | Shared, but the account, payouts and approvals should stay yours. | High: you choose exactly what to hand over. |

The platform fee applies whichever option you choose. OnlyFans says creators receive 80% of what fans pay (the platform keeps 20%); Fansly also pays creators 80%. Check each platform’s current terms, because fees change: see [OnlyFans’ terms (external site)](https://onlyfans.com/terms) and [Fansly’s terms (external site)](https://fansly.com/tos). Our guide to [agency commission](https://poutagency.com/guides/onlyfans-agency-commission-explained) explains how a commission sits on top of that.

## Which tasks are hardest to do alone?

Usually the daily, never-finished ones. Messaging and promotion both need attention most days, and both grow as the page grows. They are also where time quietly disappears: an hour of replies here, an hour of posting there.

Pricing and reporting take less time but need a method. Without one, it is easy to leave prices unchanged for months, or to miss that subscribers are leaving. Our [page KPI calculator](https://poutagency.com/tools/kpi-calculator) helps you keep an eye on [churn](https://poutagency.com/guides/glossary#churn) and conversion yourself.

Security is different. It is quiet most of the time, then urgent. If a [leak](https://poutagency.com/guides/glossary#leak) happens, acting quickly matters more than who does it, and our guide on [what to do if your content is leaked](https://poutagency.com/guides/what-to-do-if-your-content-is-leaked) sets out the steps.

## What does a hybrid set-up look like?

A hybrid means you keep the tasks you enjoy or do well, and get help with the rest. Common versions include:

- A one-off profile review and growth plan that you carry out yourself.
- A pricing review, repeated every few months.
- Promotion support only, while you keep messaging.
- Messaging support at busy times, within limits you have written down.
- A security check and help with takedowns, with everything else left to you.

Whatever the mix, put the scope in writing so both sides know who does what. If an agreement is exclusive, check it covers only the services actually provided. Our [contract checklist](https://poutagency.com/guides/onlyfans-agency-contract-checklist) explains why.

## How do I work out which option suits me?

Work through your own tasks rather than choosing a label first:

- List every task from the table above that you do now.
- Note roughly how many hours each one takes in a normal week.
- Mark each one: enjoy it, fine with it, or dread it.
- Mark which ones you do well, and which you are guessing at.
- A task that takes lots of time, drains you and feels like guesswork is the first one to hand over.

1. A creator spends about 25 hours a week on the page, outside making content.
2. Messaging takes 12 of those hours, promotion 9, pricing and reporting 2, security and admin 2.
3. They enjoy promotion and are good at it, but dread the evening messaging.
4. A hybrid with help on messaging only would free most of their evenings, while they keep control of promotion.

Made-up round numbers, not a typical result.

Once you know which tasks you might hand over, you can estimate what a commission would cost with our [commission calculator](https://poutagency.com/tools/commission-calculator), and weigh that against the time you get back.

## What are the red flags when handing over tasks?

- Being told it is all or nothing, when you only want help with some tasks.
- A scope described as “we handle everything”, with no written list.
- Anyone asking to move your payouts to their account, or to take sole control of your login. See [sharing account access safely](https://poutagency.com/guides/sharing-account-access-safely).
- Messaging support with no written limits, or any suggestion of misleading fans.
- A promised income figure or guaranteed growth, from anyone.

Our guide to [agency red flags](https://poutagency.com/guides/onlyfans-agency-red-flags) covers more warning signs, with what to ask instead.

## How Pout approaches this

Pout is an independent creator management agency for OnlyFans and Fansly. We start with a written plan that sets out which tasks we take on and which stay with you, agreed in writing before any work begins. Your account and payouts stay in your name, anything posted or sent in your name needs your approval, and we go through the results with you in a plain-English review each month.

## Common questions about agency versus doing it yourself

### Can I run the page myself first and bring in help later?

Yes. Running it yourself at first is a sensible way to learn what each task involves. Keeping simple records from the start, such as what you post, where, and what it brings in, makes it much easier to hand work over later.

### If I use an agency, can I take tasks back later?

That depends on the agreement, so check before you sign. A clear agreement lists the services included and explains how to change or end them. This is general information, not legal advice.

### Is doing it myself always cheaper?

In money, yes: there is no commission, only the platform’s fee. In time, it is the most expensive option. Whether that trade is worth it is the question our guide to whether an agency is worth it helps you answer.

### Does using an agency mean giving up control of my account?

It should not. The account, the email address on it and the payout details should stay yours, and you should be able to change your password or remove access at any time.
